"Small batch" gets printed on a lot of labels. Here's what it actually means in our workshop in Santee, South Carolina — and what happens between mixing the first oil and wrapping the last bar.
What "Small Batch" Means Here
Our batches are measured in dozens of bars, not thousands. Every batch is formulated, made, cut, cured, and wrapped by hand. When a batch sells out, the next one gets made — which is why our soap is fresh when it reaches you, and why we occasionally sell out of a favorite.
The Process, Step by Step
- Formulating. Each recipe balances hard oils for a long-lasting bar, conditioning oils for gentleness, and the right superfat so skin isn't stripped.
- Measuring. Every oil, every batch, weighed by hand. Precision here is what makes a safe, mild bar.
- Soaping and cooking. Oils and lye solution meet, then the batch is cooked hot process style until saponification completes in the pot.
- Molding and cutting. The cooked soap is packed into molds, then hand-cut into bars.
- Curing. Bars rest so they harden — a harder bar dissolves slower and lasts much longer in your shower.
- Checking and wrapping. Each bar is inspected before it's wrapped and listed.
Why Batches Vary (and Why That's a Feature)
If you've ordered the same scent twice and noticed the color or texture looks a little different — that's small batch. Natural colorants shift with the weather and the harvest. Hand-cutting means dimensions vary a fraction of an inch. We could sand down those differences with mass production, but we'd rather keep the bar honest.
What You Get That Big Production Can't
Freshness, for one — our soap reaches you months fresher than a warehouse-stored bar. Accountability, for another: when you email with a question, the person answering is the person who made the soap. And a bar made with a recipe we stand behind, because our name is on it and our neighbors buy it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does small-batch soap last as long?
Yes — and longer when it's fully cured. We cure our bars so they dissolve slowly in use. Keep unused bars dry and out of direct water spray and they'll last well.
Why did my soap look different from the photos?
Small-batch variation. Natural ingredients and hand-cutting mean every batch is slightly unique.
How fresh is small-batch soap when it ships?
We make in small runs to demand rather than stockpiling, so bars typically ship within weeks of being made.
