Fragrance-Free vs. Unscented vs. Scented: How to Choose Soap for Your Skin Type

Walk down any soap aisle and you'll see three terms used almost interchangeably: fragrance-free, unscented, and scented. They're not the same thing — and choosing right makes a real difference for reactive skin.

The Three Terms, Defined

Scented means fragrance was added — essential oils, fragrance oils, or both. The scent is a feature, and for most people it's part of the joy of handmade soap.

Unscented means no fragrance ingredients were added to the recipe. The bar smells faintly of its oils — that mild, natural "soap smell." Nothing was added to make it smell like nothing.

Fragrance-free means no fragrance of any kind was added. In practice, for handmade soap, unscented and fragrance-free usually end up in the same place: a bar with no scent added. The distinction matters more in skincare products, where "unscented" sometimes means "masking agents were added to cover the smell of the actives."

One Warning: Essential Oils Are Still Fragrance

This trips people up. An essential-oil bar is a scented bar. Lavender, peppermint, and citrus essential oils all contain aroma compounds that can trigger sensitive skin. If your skin is reactive, "naturally scented with essential oils" is not the same as unscented.

How to Choose by Skin Type

  • Reactive, eczema-prone, or post-procedure skin: unscented, every time. Fragrance is the most common cosmetic trigger. Start here.
  • Dry skin: unscented or lightly scented, with attention to the superfat — a conditioning bar matters as much as the scent question.
  • Normal, happy skin: anything you love. Rotate scents seasonally — that's half the fun of a small-batch soapery.
  • Face vs. body: consider unscented for the face even if you love scented bars for the body. Facial skin is thinner and more reactive.

How to Test Any New Bar

Whatever you choose, patch test first: use the bar on one small area for five days before full-body use. We published a free printable patch test log that walks you through it step by step.

If your skin settles on unscented and you find your groove, our artisan soaps come in scented and unscented options, and pair well with a plain moisturizer like our goat milk & honey lotion afterward.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does unscented soap smell like nothing?

It smells faintly of its natural oils — a mild, clean soap scent. No fragrance is added, and nothing is added to mask anything.

Are essential oil soaps safe for sensitive skin?

Not always. Essential oils are natural but still contain aroma compounds that irritate reactive skin. If you're sensitive, treat them like any fragrance: patch test or start unscented.

What's the difference between fragrance-free and unscented soap?

In handmade soap, effectively nothing — neither has fragrance added. The term distinction matters more in lotions and skincare, where "unscented" can include masking fragrances.
