Every September, my skin lets me know fall has arrived before my thermometer does. Cooler air outside, drier heat inside, hotter showers than I should take — the season quietly pulls moisture out of your skin. Here's the routine I recommend for easing the transition, built around natural products.
Step 1: Turn the shower temperature down (just a little)
Hot showers feel like a birthright in October, but hot water strips the lipids your barrier needs. Lukewarm water cleans just as well. If your skin looks pink and feels tight when you step out, the water's too hot — that tightness is moisture leaving.
Step 2: Swap to a richer cleansing routine
This is the season your summer gel cleanser stops being enough. A cocoa-butter-rich handmade bar deposits moisture as it cleans instead of stripping — that's exactly what I formulated my Homemade Artisan Soaps for. Oatmeal Milk & Honey is the classic fall pick; my signature ViBrancy bar is the one I reach for myself.
Wondering how a natural bar compares to what you've been using? Start with my natural vs commercial soap guide.
Step 3: Moisturize on damp skin — twice a day now
The once-a-day summer lotion habit won't survive October. Apply lotion within a few minutes of bathing while skin is still damp, and keep a second application for evening, focusing on shins, elbows, and hands. My Goat Milk & Honey Lotion is built for this: lactic acid for gentle smoothing, barrier-friendly fats, and enough scents (100+) that you won't get bored.
For the full playbook, see my natural skincare for dry skin guide — fall is when those seven steps earn their keep. And if you're introducing any new products this season — a new bar, a new lotion — run them through my free 5-day patch test protocol first; fall skin is already stressed enough.
Step 4: Exfoliate on a schedule, not on impulse
Flaky shins and elbows tempt you to scrub daily. Resist: once or twice a week with an Emulsified Sugar Scrub is the right dose — it clears the dull layer and moisturizes in one step, without leaving your barrier defenseless against the cold.
Step 5: Make the bath do some of the work
Two of my favorite fall tools are bath-side:
- Bubbling Milk Baths — milk proteins and fats replenish your moisture barrier while you soak. It's a bath that moisturizes you back.
- Bath Fizzies — cocoa butter and grape seed oil in eight scents; the ten relaxing minutes your nervous system also needs this season.
Pair either with a soy wax candle — Lavender for unwinding, Beach Breeze if you're not ready to let summer go — and October starts feeling like a feature, not a bug.
The one-sentence version
Cooler water, richer bars, lotion on damp skin twice a day, exfoliate weekly, and let the bath help. Do that and your skin will walk into winter already prepared.
